Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Navy Captain Louis Colbus, then Chief of Staff for Commander, Carrier Group EIGHT, takes the first piece of cake during "Jewish Pride in the Navy Day," September 12, 1982, a community-wide celebration sponsored by the Commodore Levy Chapel (CLC), Naval Station Norfolk (NAVSTANORFOLK), Norfolk, Virginia. The cake shows the "Mariner's Tablets," the CLC symbol, based on the symbol for Jewish military chaplains (the two tablets of the Ten Commandments, topped by the six-pointed Jewish Star), but with the ship's wheel added at the top. The celebration included the dedication of a massive wall hanging designed by local Norfolk artist Leonette Adler, based on the biblical verse from Isaiah, "Sing God's praise anew from around the world, all who sail the sea." The wall-hanging, the brainchild of Rabbi Arnold E. Resnicoff, serving as the NAVSTANORFOLK Jewish Chaplain, was worked on during the time Resnicoff's father, Jack Resnicoff, passed away, and the Jewish congregation dedicated the work to his memory. The celebration included shuttle buses between the Chapel and a number of Navy ships, to allow participants to enjoy shipboard tours.
