Description

This photo shows the CHIPS-M neutrino detector, which UCL is a partner in, shortly before it was deployed in its final position at the bottom of a 60-metre-deep flooded mine pit in Minnesota. The detector is a prototype to test technologies for future more sensitive detectors. It is designed to detect a beam of neutrinos sent from Fermilab near Chicago over 700 kilometres away.

In this photo, CHIPS-M is on the shore of the artificial lake at dawn on the morning of deployment.
