Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Diagram of chloroform (an organic compound with the formula CHCl3), showing it’s structure and net dipole moment.

Here, hydrogen is electropositive while Chlorine is highly electronegative (Pauling Scale : 3.16). Because of the high number of chlorine bonds, chloroform is a polar, covalent, tetrahedral molecule with a net dipole moment of 1.15D.

Chlorine has a higher electronegativity than Carbon, causing the carbon and hydrogen to gain a partial positive charge and chlorine to gain a partial negative charge, making the carbon-chlorine bonds polar.
