Description
English: THIS IS THE SITE OF THE LAST SKIRMISH IN NEW JERSEY IN 1782 AND POSSIBLE THE LAST BATTLE OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. IT OCCURRED BETWEEN AMERICAN PATRIOTS AND AMERICAN LOYALISTS HEADED BY PRIVATEER CAPTAIN JOHN BACON. THESE MEN WERE HIDING IN THE PINELANDS NEAR MANAHAWKIN. A RE-ENACKMENT OF THE BATTLE OCCURS EACH YEAR RIGHT AROUND THE TAVERN. IT IS NOT CERTAIN IF THE TAVERN WAS THERE WHEN THE BATTLE TOOK PLACE BUT THE ROAD WAS A STAGECOACH ROAD VERY EARLY. THE TAVERN IS NOW OWNED BY THE COUNTY
