Various archaeologists suggested that as thunderstorms and torrential rain washed away part of the soil from exposed sites, the farmers of 6,000 years ago were finding difficulty in feeding an ever growing population from the scarce poor soil of the Maltese islands which are basically solid rock. The suggestion is that the Maltese farmers built up fields similar to those found in the Aran Islands, and also cut channels into the rock to channel away and save rain water, and thus protect the precious soil. This is one of the many theories about these so called "Cart-Ruts". - MALTA |
