Title |
CAM-5FDAF7, VESSEL, Roman Samian |
||
Description |
English: Box 2 of two boxes. An assemblage of 41 Roman sherds from different vessels, both fine wares and coarse wares. The weight totals 314.11g. The weight including the first box (CAM-5F8927) totals 809.2g. Box 2 consists of the following vessel types:
A collection of Samian consisting of 13 sherds from different vessels, including 4 rims and 2 bases and weighing 93.72g. The largest sherd is a fragment of a foot ring from a platter which may be a Dragendorff Form 15/17, dating to the second half of the 1st century. A sherd from a decorated Samian bowl, probably from a Dragendorff Form 29 or 37, dating from AD 43 to the mid 3rd century. All that survives is a small part of the foot ring and part of the decorated base. It appears to be decorated with a medallion, rosettes and a bow. Two small Samian rim sherds, both from a flared cup and both having upward turning rims. They both are likely to be Dragendorff Form 46 which dates from the later 1st to the 2nd century. 1 rim of a straight-sided Samian vessel. It is too small to date with confidence but it resembles a Dragendorff Form 22 or 23 which dates from the 1st century. 10 sherds of greyware, probably locally produced, including 5 rims and weighing 104.9g. 12 sherds of a dark coloured ware including 6 rims from jars. The fabric is micaceous and has occasional shell inclusions, weight 103.73g. 1 rim sherd in an orange/red sandy fabric of a fairly thick-walled vessel. The rim has a thin grey core, weight 30.34g. 1 miscellaneous rim sherd weighing 18.22g. 4 miscellaneous body sherds in a reddish fabric reduced to a dark grey exterior, weighing 13.2g. |
