Notes de Beaumont has noted on upper paper cover verso: ‘Trevelyan(?) 5.81 £13 Owen Jones wrapper? Yes, see Cundall p. 69’. He also gives more notes about this, on a separate slip. Some of the illustrations are signed W. G. Mason [i.e. Walter George Mason]. Text sewn with one cord, threaded through the middle. The paper wrapper covers were of pink dye, now faded on the outside. Robin de Beaumont’s small square bookplate is on the upper cover verso. On top left hand corner is the ticket of: “/From / Westertons/ Hyde Park Corner./” Inscribed on the middle: “/ Marion Davidson/ Jan(?) 12th 1852/ London/ With Grandmama’s best/ love/”. Both covers are printed with an identical decorative design of honeysuckle(?) In the central panel of the lower cover, titles are listed, in the series “Pleasure books for Young Children. Sixpence plain, one shilling, coloured.” This title is number eighteen in the series. The upper cover has the title: “/Peter the Goatherd/ Illustrated with six pictures/ [rule]/ Price sixpence, plain/ one shilling, hand coloured. The spine is not lettered. / London: Cundall and Addey, 21 Old Bond Street./” This book acquired with the generous assistance of the British Library Collections Trust. Another copy (probably) of this work is at British Library shelf mark 12805h42
