Notes

The text is partly in Yorkshire dialect. Text sewn on three sawn-in cords. Beige paper over boards. Yellow endpapers and pastedowns. Robin de Beaumont’s small square bookplate is on the upper pastedown. He has noted on the half title page: “/ECB. Jan 1892. 17/ Royal National 3 05 £10/”. The upper pastedown has the circular ticket of: “/ J. Preston/ Late Cubly(?) & Preston/ 55 Fargate/ and/ 33 Church St./ Sheffield/”. The lower cover has a list of works by John Hartley. Grimes’ visit to the Queen is priced at “1/- nett.” The upper cover is printed in red and black. The illustration shows Grimes in the royal audience chamber, which has a chequerboard floor. His umbrella is in his left hand, his top hat in this right. He is bowing to Queen Victoria, who is seated on a ‘throne’. Queen Victoria holds the sceptre in her right hand, the orb in her left hand. The title words: “/ /Grimes’/ Visit to the/ Queen/ A royal time amang [sic]/ Royalties/” are printed in black within a pennant, against a red background. Below the feet of Queen Victoria, the words: “/ By John/ Hartley./ are printed in red on the stairs. The price “1/6” is printed in red on a white label. The imprint is at the tail. On the spine, “/ Grimes’ visit to the Queen./” are printed in black letters along it. This book acquired with the generous assistance of the British Library Collections Trust.
