Notes Orange dyed paper over boards. The half title page and the frontispiece are illustrated. Printed on the upper pastedown and upper endpaper, there are fifty-seven volumes in the series: “the Run and Read Library. The best cheap series of popular tales. 335th thousand. Consisting of works uniting entertainment and sound principles.” This work is number 57 in this series, price 1s. 6d. The same list is bound in at the end. The lower pastedown and lower endpaper verso list titles published by Simpkin, Marshall & Co. The lower cover depicts an ‘industrial’ landscape, with the title: “/ The/ Run and Read Library/ for/ Railway/ Road/ & River./ Consisting of/ works/ uniting/ taste/ Humour/ and/ sound principles./” At the head: “335th thousand.” At the tail: “/ Ipswich: J. M. Burton & Co. /” To the left and right of the lower cover are quotations from other authors. The upper cover has the title and imprint above and below a picture of a young lady in a woodland setting. The spine is divided by rules into seven panels. Panel one has: “The Run and Read Library.” Panel two depicts a steam engine. Panel three has the title. Panel four shows a stagecoach. Panel five has the name of the author. Panel six shows a steamship. Panel seven has the price: “One shilling and sixpence.” This book acquired with the generous assistance of the British Library Collections Trust. Another copy (probably) of this work is at British Library shelf mark 12632b12.
