Notes Plate I is bound at the front. P:late numbers II-XVI are bound at the rear. The Preface is dated: “Bayswater, April 1860.” Yellow paper over boards. Publisher’s titles are printed on endpapers and pastedowns. The verso of the title age advertises: “A superior edition of this work… with Illustrations printed in colours and bound in cloth… price 3s. 6d., or with gilt edges 4s.” The frontispiece recto has de Beaumont’s notes and a gift inscription. The lower cover lists titles in the series: “Books in the Country.” The upper cover is printed in colours. Above and below the centre are the words: “ “/ One Shilling/ British/ Butterflies./ W. S. Coleman/ with/ Illustrations/ George Routledge and Sons./” On the centre, four butterflies are in flight. On the spine, “British Butterflies are in red letters along its length, within a black cartouche. At the tail: “1/-“ is printed.
