Português: O Cânion do Xingó, considerado o quinto maior cânion do mundo e o maior navegável, surgiu após o represamento das águas do Rio São Francisco para a construção da Usina Hidrelétrica do Xingó (inaugurada em 1994), na divisa entre Alagoas e Sergipe.
O rio em si foi descoberto por Américo Vespúcio em 4 de outubro de 1501, dia de São Francisco de Assis e assim foi chamado em homenagem ao santo. O Velho Chico é imenso, nascendo em Minas Gerais, passando pela Bahia, Pernambuco, Sergipe e Alagoas, antes de desembocar no Oceano Atlântico. E é na divisa entre estes dois últimos estados que se encontra o Cânion do Xingó. O rio Xingó é um dos inúmeros braços do Velho Chico, já na parte alagoana. Com a construção da barragem do Xingó, o Rio São Francisco triplicou seu tamanho, retendo seu volume e inundando as áreas ao redor. Um desses locais é hoje o chamado Cânion do Xingó. |
