. Cars run fromthe square to all the surrounding towns. Passing by Pine Banks Park, on the right, one of thefinest pleasure grounds in America, the factories of theBoston Rubber Shoe Company are soon seen, with charm-ing background of the Middlesex Fells Reservation. Thecar soon enters Melrose, formerly a part of Maiden, whichwas established as Melrose in 1850. At Melrose High-lands a car is taken that runs through the picturesquelittle village of Greenwood with its many market gardens.Crystal Lake, bordered by attractive residences, is passedbefore the car enters Wakefield, formerly called SouthReading, the name being changed in 1868, in honor ofCyrus Wakefield, who established the rattan industry andthe great factories here. For nearly two miles the ride isalong the shore of pretty Lake Quannapowitt, with manya winding turn, affording delightful views. About a milefrom the lake the car enters Reading Square in Reading. EASTERN NEW ENGLAND 121 This was known until 1644 as Lynn Village. Leavingthe square for Lawrence, and running through Main Street,West Village in North Reading is soon reached. Theold turnpike over which the car runs is sixty-six feet inwidth, and is a splendid roadway. At West Village thecar crosses the Ipswich River and through a beautifulrural country, past Fosters Pond, to Andover an ancientacademic town, settled about 1643 on the Indian lands ofCochichewick, which was bought from the natives for$26.64 and an old coat. Andover was affected by theIndian wars and the witchcraft delusion. The buildingsand grounds of the Abbot Seminary, founded in 1878, andAndover Theological Seminary, founded in 1808, are inthe centre. At 147 Main Street, America was written.The extensive buildings of Phillips Academy are stretchedout over a large campus on the west side of Main Street,and on the opposite side may be seen the TheologicalSeminary, near which is the Mansion House, the home ofHarriet B
