The net broke; and these fisher-men, much of the time under water, held up thetorn meshes above the surface, while others, withhuge bamboo baskets, hastily lugged the booty up tothe shore and dumped it into empty boats. But oh,the millions of sardines that escaped! The wavesalong the beach were alive with them. Delightfulmust have been the feast of the boys and girls dwell-ing in every home in that vicinity who swoopeddown upon the beach with pots and all sorts ofvessels to pick up the sardines washed up in heapson the sand. Boat after boat was filled, and yet itseemed so long till the nets were emptied; feebleold men continued working in the cold deep till theywere blue and trembling and utterly exhausted.
