The Papyrus of Ani, the Scribe. 137 was very brittle, and I was amazed at the beauty andfreshness of the colours of the human figures and animals,which, in the dim light of the candles and the heated airof the tomb, seemed to be alive. A glunpse of theJudgment Scene showed that the roll was a large andcomplete Codex of the Per-em-hru, or Book of theDead, and scores of lines repeated the name of the manfor whom this magnificent roll had been written andpainted, viz., Ani, the real^ royal scribe, the registraryof the offerings of all the Gods, overseer of the granariesof the Lords of Abydos, and scribe of the offerings of theLords of Thebes.
