Le plâtre original (Musée d'Orsay) a été modelé en septembre 1873 au cours de l'avant-dernier séjour que fit Carpeaux chez Alexandre Dumas à Puys près de Dieppe. Il est exposé au Salon de 1875, en hommage à Carpeaux, alors gravement malade.
