Summary
[edit]DescriptionBust of a princess of the Severian period, Vatican Museum, Rome (12967798834).jpg | Bust of a princess of the Severian period, Vatican Museum, Rome, Italy. Found by Giovanni Volpato in 1780 on the Quadraro estate, between the Appian Way and the Via Tuscolana. Acquired by the Vatican Museum, it was then restored by Lisandroni who carved the bust and hair, originally worked separately and then applied to the statue. The face, with idealized features, shows a princess of the imperial Severus family. Stylistic elements indicate a date between 210 and 230 AD, suggesting an identification with Julia Mesa, the sister of Julia Domna, or with her daughter, Julia Soemia, mother of the emperor Heliogabalus, who reigned from 218 to 222 AD. |
