Bust of Prosepine by Hiram Powers, Philadelphia Museum of Art

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Bust of Prosepine by Hiram Powers at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Description from the museum reads: "Bust of Proserpine. 1844. Hiram Powers. American, 1805-1873. Marble. Hiram Powers was among the first Americans to join the international community of artists who lived and worked in Italy in the early 1800s. He became famous for his idealized female figures carved in marble in the Neoclassical style. In this marble Powers depicts Proserpine (the Italian name for Persephone), a figure in Greek mythology who married Pluto, king of the underworld (Hades), and lived with him there for part of each year. Proserpine's descent to Hades caused winter and he return signaled spring. The flowers around the base represent the renewed fertility of that season. Gift of Mr. and Mrs. F. Woodson Hancock in memory of Edward Carey Gardner, 1978-18-1a."
