Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Bust of Eubuleus. Marble. Found at Eleusis. The bust depicts the mythical Eleusinian chthonic hero Eubuleus, brother of Triptolemos. Eubuleus is associated with the mystery cult at Eleusis. According to tradition he was a swineherd. When Persephone was abducted by Plouto, he was grazing his herd near the point where the earth opened to receive the god’s chariot, and few of his pigs fell into the chasm. This episode of the myth is related to the practice of throwing pigs into subterranean chasms during the festival of the Skirophoria. About 330-320 B.C. Accession Number: 181. National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Athens, Greece. Text credit: Museum inscription.
