Title
English: Businesses in tents along Second Ave. in aftermath of Great Fire, Seattle, July 1889
Description
English:

The Great Fire of June 6, 1889 was a turning point in Seattle's history, destroying 100 acres of Seattle's business district and waterfront, changing both the physical and political landscapes of the city. The city didn't take much time to mourn; by July, businesses throughout the burned-out area had reopened in tents, houses, or wherever they could find space. Most businesses decided to rebuild where they had been, and rebuilding began almost immediately. The postcard shows businesses set up in tents along Second Avenue, looking north from Cherry Street, in the aftermath of the fire. Businesses include Raymond Eggert & Co. Boots & Shoes; Pacific Clothing House; Herschberg Boots & Shoes; the Palace Restaurant; and F.C. Young & Co. Jewelers. A small handwritten sign affixed to the pole in the foreground advertises "A.F. Schlumpf & Co. Tippers & Plumbers Ready For Work. Columbia St. bt 4 & 5."
