ons. Give me the rope, cried Mr. Sukolt, in a husky-voice, as he took in the situation. A miner handedover a lariat which he had taken along to lower thebucket into the mine, and before the men realizedwhat had happened, Mr. Sukolt had swung downbeside the children. Then balancing himself byclinging to Bushys rope he called for the men tohaul up the other, attach the bucket and lower itimmediately. Willie, limp and unconscious, was put in first. The storm was now over, and an almost dreadfulstillness reigned. The bucket slowly ascended. The men said not a word when they lifted out thelittle boy and again lowered the bucket for Bushy.Bushy had only murmured, I could not help it.Padre; he would go under the tree and the lightningstruck him. Her white face set with pain andcold, grew whiter as her father tenderly lifted herfrom her cramped position. Silently she was hoisted to the top. One of theminers wound his coat close about her while an-other rubbed her chilled feet in his warm hands.

I LI. IK^LD YOU, WILLIE, DEAR, SHE SAID. I THE NEW YORK , „ u ir.. .s BUSHY 205 Mr. Sukolt then came, hand over hand up the rope, and the httle procession moved down toward thecamp at Silver City. Any hope ? anxiously asked Bushys fatheras he placed Willie in Shankss arms. Bushy sayshe was struck by Hghtning. Hell be all right to-morrow, came cheerilyfrom the miners lips; no doubt he fell backward, and that explains how he happened to go over thecliff. He is hurt more by the fall than by thelightning. Bushy cried herself to sleep that night. When itwas learned how Willie had meant to divide his hairWith, her, his mamma cut four of the longest curlsfrom his head and gave them to Bushy, saying: Itis all I have to give for saving Willie from thewicked stream. Bushy had the curls made into a beautiful neck-lace when she got big, and often looks at it now,put away so carefully in a little square box, linedwith soft blue cotton, and wonders where Willie is,and if he knows how much she loved
