ay so still beforeher. The miners stepped back, and in their pity forBushy almost forgot that the Indians were stilllurking about. Bushys Hps began to tremble, andat last, realizing that Pete would never play withher any more, she got up, and slipping her hand inher fathers, looked up with tears streaming fromher eyes and said: Whats the weason. Padre;whats the weason ? I think it has all come about because my littlegirl disobeyed her papa, rephed her father, se-riously. That was too much for Bushy. Sheclasped his knees, and crying as if her heart would 20 BUSHY break, promised to be a dood dirl all her life if hewould bring Pete back again. But poor Pete wasdead. He was about ready to die anyway, Tom saidto the Padre afterward, for Bushy had hugged himto a mere skeleton. But Bushy never quite gotover thinking his death came about through hernaughtiness; and whenever she was inchned not tomind her father the picture of poor Pete wouldcome up before her and she would hesitate nolonger.

She was the only little girlin camp—the only child, in fact—and, of course, theypetted her and thought everything she did was justright. I suppose she often did naughty things, likeany other little girl, yet she saved their Hves one day,and after that the miners could not do enough forher. On this particular morning Mr. Sukolt hadordered the men to do an extra days work, becausea certain amount of ore was to be sent down themountain that night. Tom, I want you to stop long enough to get ahot dinner for the boys; you and Bushy can bring itover, and save the time that would be spent in goingto the shanty, he said, as he left early and joinedthe miners at the Great Pine Mine. Bushy busied herself, as she always did, in whatshe called helping Tom do up.
