35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Artiodactyla; Family: Suidae; Genus: Potamochoerus; Genus species: Potamochoerus porcus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 100-150 cm; Height: 76 cm; Weight: 50-120 kg; Identification: The bushpig has red to gray bristles and a white face and mane. The males have facial warts; Habitat: Forests, moist savanna woodlands, grasslands; Diet: Omnivore: fungi, ferns, grasses, leaves, roots, bulbs, fruit, insect larvae, frogs, mice, earthworms; Reproduction: Females gestate for 127 days before giving birth to their young. The size of the litter is dependent on environmental conditions. The young are weaned at three months of age and remain with their mother until she gives birth again. Bushpigs usually live for 10-15 years; Social Structure: Foraging is done in family groups. Other social groups include bachelor groups and matriarchal sounders that contain 1+ adult females and their young. Boars may also be solitary; Behavior: These highly vocal animals are active during the day and at night; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Bushpigs especially enjoy the seeds of the tree Balanites wilsoniana, which they find undigested in the feces of elephants.
