Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Lignite coal & mudrocks in the Tertiary of North Dakota, USA.

These are Paleocene-aged, nonmarine sedimentary rocks. The surrounding landscape has been weathered and eroded into badlands topography. The gray material is weathered and slumped mudrocks. The black area at center is a mammal burrow. The black material at the mouth of the burrow consists of crumbs of lignite coal. Lignite is a low rank of coal - it is lightweight, brown to black colored, soft, friable, sooty, may have visible plant fragments, and burns in a fire (it's a fossil fuel). It crumbles when dried out and can spontaneously ignite. Compositionally, lignite coal has 25 to 35% carbon content. Lignite is sooty-burning; relatively little heat is generated compared with higher ranks of coal.

Stratigraphy: Sentinel Butte Formation, Upper Paleocene

Locality: outcrop along Painted Canyon Trail, Little Missouri Badlands, Roosevelt National Park, western North Dakota, USA
