O n BURPEE'S White Wonder cucumber. In the spring of 1890 we re- ceived a few of the seeds from a customer in Western New York, who descrihed it us follows :— " The cucumbers are white from the time they begin to grow, and are the best 1 have ever seen, either for eating fresh or pickling." We carefully planted the seed with such highly satisfactory re- sults that Ave immediately pur- chased the entire stock, which consisted of only a few ounces, from the originator, together with the exclusive right of introduc- tion ; from this we produced stock seed in 1891, from which we have raised the past season a splendid crop. The White Wonder sur- passes the White Pearl, hoth in handsome appearance and fine quality, while its strong, vigorous, extremely healthy habit of growth enables the vines to produce a large crop of perfect fruit, even under adverse conditions. Its strong constitution is exceptional; the past season our crops of fine, delicately - flavored Cucumbers, such as White Pearl and Giant Pera, were almost total failures, owing to the excessive wet weather when in the third leaf, followed by two months of very hot, dry weather, the plants that escaped the floods of June being scorched by the drouth of July and August. The White Wonder, which was planted at the same time and under the same conditions, lost hardly a plant, either by weather or disease, the strong, vigorous vines retaining their full, green foliage until the cucumbers were almost ripe for seed. The illustration shows three average specimens accurately en- graved from a photograph. The cucumbers are thickly set through- out the length of the vine and are remarkably uniform in color, shape, and size; they average about eight inches long by two to two and a half inches through ; the skin is extremely thin, but very tough, and the pearly white flesh is exquisitely fine in quality, very brittle, and remains solid for a long time. The color is always ivory white. Owing to its unu- sual hardiness of constitution, the White Wonder can be planted earlier than most other Cucum- bers, and is also a sure cropper.
