BURPEE'S FARM ANNUAL FOR 1893. 3 THE EXPRESS AND FREIGHT ORDER DEPARTMENT, shown below, is located on the third âââ floor, and is devoted to the packing of seeds that go by freight or express. Here is kept in large drawers, bins, and in sacks a complete duplicate stock of all the garden and farm seeds catalogued by usâall flower seeds being obtained, on order, from the floor below Only men are employed in this department, and by years of practice they have become very efficient in packing boxes, barrels, and sacks of seed neatly and securely. As soon as filled, the orders, each accom- panied by a memorandum sheet, specifying number and description of packages, route, etc., and signed by the " filler," are sent by the elevator to the ground floor, where the shipping clerk makes out the bills of lading, and sees that the wagons are properly loaded for the different freight stations. The elevator shaft is located about twenty-five feet back from the northern door on the York Avenue side; thus a wide, unobstructed area, extending to the wide doorway south, allows ample room for the sorting of sacks, boxes, and barrels. A STORE ROOM, where is kept a portion of our âââââââ stock of Peas, Beans, Sweet Corn, and Small Garden Seeds, in bags, the bulk of the seed grain being stored on other floors and in another warehouse.

THE PRINTING OFFICE. This is devoted , exclusively to the printing of labels and seed bags, all our circulars and Catalogues being printed for us. By the three steam presses in this room running throughout the year we print the millions of packets in which our seeds are neatly papered. In an adjoining room is a wonder of American mechanism, a machine run by steam that accurately measures, packets, and instantly pastes packets of seed. THE SHIPPING OFFICE is located south â^ââ of the southern door on York Avenue. In this office the shipping clerks, besides making out the bills of lading and records as to shipments, also notify the consignees of the shipment of each order. AMONG OTHER DEPARTMENTS which are not illustrated we might mention The Private Office, which is placed in communication with different parts of the building by means of electric bells and speaking tubes, The Stock Seed Room, The Seed Cleaning Room, and The Potato Stores. 4®=- It is our rule to fill all orders the day after they are received. This we are enabled to do by our ex- cellent facilities and large force of skilled employees, many of whom are seedsmen of long experience. Our £romptness in filling orders, together with the quality of our seeds, has gained us such a host of friends that we ave the largest merchandise mail in Philadelphia, and the largest mail seed business in the United States. y
