Burpee's Mammoth Silver King Onion. The Mammoth Silver King Onion, named and introduced by us in 1884, grows to a most remarkable size. The bulbs are of attractive form, flattened, but thick through, as shown in the illustration. The average diameter of the onions is from 5 to 7J inches—thus making the circumference from 15 to 22 inches. Single bulbs often attain weights of from 2J to 4 pounds each. The skin is a beautiful silvery white ; the flesh is snowy white and of a particularly mild and pleasant flavor. So sweet and tender is the flesh that it can be eaten raw, like an apple. The Silver King matures early and is uniformly of large size and perfect form. It cannot be too highly recommended, either for family use, for exhibition at fairs or in restaurants, or for sale on market during fall and early win- ter, where its size and beauty prove very striking. For several years we offered cash prizes for the largest Silver King Onions grown from our seed. In 1885 Alfred Rose, Penn Yan, N. Y., won the first prize with two onions of the enormous weight of 4^ lbs. and 4 lbs. 2 ozs. In 1889 the first prize was awarded to Edward Smith, Benkleman, Nebraska, for an onion weigh- ing 4 lbs. ii ozs., while an onion of 4 lbs. 4 ozs. weight captured the second prize for Abel Steele, Ferguson, Ontario. Per pkt. 10 cts.; oz. 25 cts.; 2 ozs. 40 cts.; £ lb 7.5 cts.; lb $2.50. MAMMOTH POMPEII. In 1887 our first Prize was won hX L B* Taylor' Ellensburg, * Washington, with an onion weighing 4 lbs. 9 ozs., ^—^ while an onion 4 lbs. 8 ozs. in weight secured the second prize for J. V. H. Young, /Tln\ Arroyo Grande, California. Notwithstanding the enormous size attained by specimens \)nD) of this variety, they retain their fine quality. The skin is very thin and delicate in ap- pearance, of a handsome, reddish-brown color ; the flesh is pure white, very fine-grained, and remarkably mild, Per pkt, 10 cts.; oz. 20 cts.; 2 ozs, 35 cts.; J ft) 60 cts.; per lb $2.00.
