The Wonderful Japanese Rose, CRIMSON RAMBLER. This really remarkable new variety, which we now offer for the first time, it is safe to say will prove the sen- sation of the year in Roses. In our estimation nothing of like importance or value has been found during the last ten years. It was originally found in Japan by the engineer of a steamship, who brought it to England. There it came under the notice of a noted English Rose-grower, who at once real- ized its great worth. In 1890 it was submitted to the Roval This Engraving was made "^PiL k.^r + Horticultural Society, which promptly gave'it the highest award. It was also shown at the from a Photograph of a ^IHH - \& Paris Exposition and other centers crgating the greatest entnusiasm everywhere. So rapidly did favor shower on all sides that the stock was considered worth $15,000 to Trained to a Post. m^>T" VZZ^ HEUS^Ef^ its fortunate owner. Finally it was re- • " ceived m this country, and from a small beginning an immense stock of line plants is now at our disposal. Some idea of its superbly distinct style may be formed from the illustration herewith, which was engraved from the photograph of a single plant in the grounds of tbe English grower who brought this variety to the front. It is a very vigorous grower, sending up during one season splendid shoots eight to ten feet high, and mak- ing a most desirable climber. Also pegged down in a bed a single plant will give a surprising pro- fusion of foliage and flowers. The bright, glossy green leaves are entirely distinct and present a perfect mass, which forms a p 1 e n d i d back- ground for the well-set double flowers, which are produced in immense pyram- idal trusses of a glowing crimson color almost start- ling in brilliancy. The truly royal trusses of flowers re-< main a long time without' failing or losing their vivid brightness. The foliage also remains bright green long after the leaves of other Roses have fallen. In ad- dition to all the good qual- ities named, it is exceedingly hardy, having successfully \vithstood the test in exposed fuations for two very severe winters. After careful considera- tion we can confidently recommend Crimson Rambler for five dif- ferent purposes:— As a climb- M-Kol.. ing Rose for a veranda or trel- lis it will quickly at- tain a height of eight to ten feet, making a perfect screen and bear- ing a mass of bloom heretofore undreamed of. 0CL.UI1JJ. the border it can be trained with supports into a luxuriant and striking clump five to seven feet high—such as is shown in the illustration. ^nvlTHIRD:p1tntsieng!ed down in a bed will make a flower bed in itself, as the shoots will spread around and the bed ap- pear a mass of rich foliage and bright crimson trusses won- derful to behold. PHTTPTTT • Trained over stumps, rocks, or unsightly objects, it will flourish and spread in a way thought rUUJ\lri» impossible for a Rose. •pj-p-pTj* With proper supports plants set three feet apart in a single line will make the most remarkable rli"11II. hedge of foliage and flowers ever seen. TOQTTM TTP» ^nis *s a R°se f°r everybody—North, South, East, and West. There is nothing like it. oUIU UJT. Every one who has plants should make a place for it. Notwithstanding that it was offered wholesale the past fall for $1.00 each, an immense stock of sturdy, well-rooted plants enables us to make the un- heard-of low price of 20 cts. each, or six plants for $1.00, postpaid.
