In our colored plate we had hoped to present an exact likeness of this new melon, but, while the artist has correctly represented the outer appearance, he has failed to catch the crystalline and rich, suffused salmon color of the flesh. The Emerald Gem is entirely unlike any other musk- melon yet introduced. The melons are about the size of Burpee's Netted (iem, but, unlike that variety, the skin, while ribbed, is perfectly smooth and of a very deep emerald green color. The flesh, which is thicker than in any other native melon of the same size, is of a suffused salmon color, and ripens thoroughly to the thin green rind, which is distinctly defined. The flesh is peculiarly crystalline in appearance, and so very juicy and rich that it almost drops to pieces (like a rich cake) when dipped out with a spoonâa fork should not be used. The flavor is sweet and luscious beyond description; out of one h'undred varieties this was unanimously pronounced the best, and altogether unapproached in delicious flavor. An enthusiastic lover of fine melons, when asked for his opinion of its quality, exclaimed, 'â 'Nectar-ambrosia!'^ We are sure that all who grow The Emerald Gem this year will praise it as the finest-flavored melon they have ever tasted. The vines are hardy and thrifty in growth, very prolific, bearing the melons near the root; the melons mature extra early and are uniforjnly of the most superb quality. The Emerald Gem is a chance seedling, discovered some years ago by AVm. G. Voorheis, Esq., of Benzie County, Michigan, who has annually selected seed from the most perfect and earliest fruits. We offer a limited quantity of the seed, of our own growing, for sale this year, and, as it is so very scarce, we can put only ten seeds in a packetâsufficient, however, to enable those who purchase to enjoy the coming summer this gem among melons.
