BURPEE'S FARM ANNUAL FOR 1886. 21
Text Appearing After Image:
NEW MAMMOTH SILVER KING—THE LARGEST OF ALL WHITE ONIONS, NEW MAMMOTH SILVER KING ONION. The Mammoth Silver King Onion, introduced by us in 1884, grows to a most remarkable size— larger than any other variety in cultivation, excepting only the New Mammoth Pompeii, described on page 8. The bulbs are of attractive form, flattened, but thick through, as shown in the illustra- tion above. The average diameter of the onions is from 5 to 7 !^ inches—thus making the circum- ference from 15 to 22 inches. Single bulbs often attain weights of from 2j4, to 4 pounds each. The skin is of a beautiful silvery white; the flesh is snowy white, and of a particularly mild and pleasant flavor. So sweet and tender is the flesh that it can be eaten raw, like an apple. The Silver King matures early and is tmiformly of large size and perfect form. Before offering this variety for sale, sample packets of the seed were distributed for trial the previous season, and all the reports received corroborate our high opinion of the Silver King. Every one desiring the largest and handsomest onions, of the finest flavor, will be more than satisfied with the Silver King. // cannot be too highly recornmended, either for family use, for exhibition at fairs or in restaurants, or for sale on market, where its size and beauty will prove very striking. Our customers will remember the reports of the large prize onions, weighing from 3 pounds, 1 ounce, to 3 i/. ^i.oo; per lb. $3.50.
