AN EXACT LIKENESS, REDUCED IN SIZE, OF MAMMOTH POMPEII ONION. NEW MAMMOTH POMPEII ONION. This Mammoth New Onion originated in Italy, near the ancient buried city of Pompeii. Last year we stated, " Some idea of the mammoth size to which this variety grows, may be formed from the statement that the first year from seed the onions frequently attain 2 to 2^ inches greater diameter than in the illustration, and a weight of 2j^ to "^^y^ poimdsT and we offered S35.00 cash for the two largest ^Mammoth Pompeii Onions grown in 1885. These prizes were won by Mr, Alfred Rose, Penn Yan, Yates Co., New York, whose largest onion was of such enormous size that we would not have believed possible to grow in one season from the seed, were it not that Mr. Rose is well known for veracity, and his affidavit to the weights was attested by responsible parties present at the weighing. The largest Mammoth Pompeii Onion grown by Alfred Rose weighed 5 pounds, i ounce, the next largest weighed 3 pounds, 14 ounces. Next in the competition came \V. P. Mast, Esq., of Fairview, Oregon, whose largest Mammoth Pompeii Onion weighed 3 pounds, 11 ounces; Mr. Samuel Kennedy, Zaleski, Ohio, raised one weighing 3 pounds ; and Mr. D. J. Slaymaker, Atkinson, Nebraska, one of 2 pounds, 7^ ounces; while a number of other customers sent us mammoth specimens of fine form and quality. We renew our Premium Offer for 1886, and will pay $25.00 cash to the grower of the largest Mammoth Pompeii Onion, and $10.00 to the grower of the second largest specimen raised this year from seed bought of us. Competition open to all except the winner of last year's prizes, as we want our other customers to enter heartily into the competition, and they might be deterred by the extraordinary weights of Mr. Rose's onions, which we do not think can be equaled. Notwithstanding the enormous size attained by specimens of this variety, they retain their perfect shape and fine quality, and do not become ungainly monstrosities. The skin is very thin and delicate in appearance, of a beautiful, handsome, reddish-brown color, as shown in our colored plate of last year's Catalogue; the flesh is pure white, very fine grained, and remarkably mild and pleasant to the taste. At exhibitions, or displayed for sale on city fruit stands, this variety is sure to attract great attention. Per pkt. 15 cts.; oz. 35 cts.; 2 oz. 60 cts.; % R). $1.00; per ft. $3.50.
