BrahB^n. Burpee's 'Brittle Wax." The enormous edition of our catalogue for 1902, and the fact that the " forms" have to go to press very early in order to begin mailing by December first to the extreme Southern States, render it necessary for these " Novelty Pages " to be prepared before the final results of the-interesting contest for the prizes offered last year are definitely decidea. Every 'â compel it 01: will receive, however, not later than January, our complete Prize Supplement, giving in full the list of awards, with names and addresses of the successful winners of the Two Hundred and Fifty Dollars in Cash Prizes, offered last year when we sold this variety for advance trial at the extravagant price of twenty cents for fifty beans ! And yet, so successful and so superior has this " New Twentieth Century Wax Bean " proved everywhere that we feel sure not a single planter, out of the thousands who took it exclusively upon our recommendation, regretted his purchase. It has " come to stay " and undoubtedly is the best and most productive extra early wax bean yet developed. Burpee's "Brittle Wax," ^fcSf°-si?"^'f Pod (described on page 14),originated with N. B. Ki;i: & Son, of Genessee County, N. Y. It has proved worth of the strong praise given by these careful growers, and has already "made a record,"âaltogether un- equaled,âby reason of its superb quality, extreme earltness, and great productiveness: It com- bines the most desirable features of both par- ents,âthe Black-Eye Wax and "the Round* ^ Pod Refugee. The plants are of vigorous growth, with large foliage, while its pro- ductiveness is shown by the first prize bush grown in Ontario, upon which ^. we counted one hundred and ⢠.^^s^4.vsS sixty-seven pods. The plants appear completely loaded with handsome pods, which are nearly straight and measure 4^ to 6 inches long. They are very broad and solidly fleshy,â deeply saddle-backed,âtender, "brittle," and entirely string- less at all stages of growth. The po'ds are unexcelled as snapshorts, while having white seeds, showing only a small black dot at the eye, any surplus allowed to ripen will be readily saleable as winter shell beans.
