Title
Burnt samian ware
Description
English: Single sherd of burnt Roman Samian ware, dating from the 1st – 3rd centuries. The fragment is made of a fine dark orange fabric and the characteristic dark redish orange glaze has turned grey in colour where the vessel has been exposed to flames. The base of the fragment has the remains of a foot ring and part of the makers stamp can be seen on the inside of the vessel; this is impressed and appears as raised writing in a sunken panel. The sherd weighs 15.58g and measures 51.47mm in length and 26.9mm in width.
