English: This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 4 May 2021, is the first image acquired in 2021 of a burn scar from one of the dramatic 2020 wildfires in the Siberian Arctic. The burnt areas have been “well-preserved” by the snow. The 2020 fire season in Siberia will be remembered as one of the worst in recent history, with a total burned area of about 26 million hectares (260,000 square kilometres) according to scientists. The fires lasted for the entire summer and continued into October, by when the snow started covering the burn scars. This image shows the burnt area resulting from a wildfire that occurred in July 2020, 10 km north of Buor-Sysy in the Sakha Republic. This false colours image was obtained from a combination from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 spectral bands, including shortwave infrared channels that are widely used in vegetation monitoring, as well as in various fire monitoring applications. |
