Summary
[edit]DescriptionBurgh Island - waterfront buildings - geograph.org.uk - 671010.jpg |
English: Burgh Island - waterfront buildings. The photo was taken at low tide mid-winter with no holiday makers in sight. The view shows the Burgh Island Hotel (built in 1929 in an Art Deco style). On the right of the waterfront is the Pilchard Inn which is a 14th building reputed to have been used many years ago by local smugglers. The sandy bank connecting the island to the mainland is called a tombolo. This is covered as the tide rises and access to the island is then only by a boat or the islands own special sea tractor. 413390
The island is privately owned but members of the public can walk along the paths on the western side of the island and can access the viewing point at the highest point on the island. |
