Description

English: The Burgess Shale Formation is one of the world’s most famous fossil fields, noted for its incredible preservation of the soft parts of fossils, dating from the Cambrian (535 million years ago). Since its discovery in 1909, over 200 animal species have been described, including the most primitive known vertebrate. The quarries are located near Emerald Lake and the town of Field, in Yoho National Park in the Canadian Rockies, at 51.5 degrees north, 116.5 degrees west. The perspective view image covers an area of about 20 by 25 km, and was acquired August 30, 2007.
