Summary

Description
English: Bunratty Folk Park - Bunratty Castle entrance - Site# 4 This view is of the back side of the castle. In 970, this land was a Viking trading camp. The first castle built on this site in 1250 was a defensive fortress, consisting of an earthen mound with a wooden tower on top. Later on, a stone castle was built, but the castle & town were completely destroyed when the owner was killed in a battle in 1318. The castle was restored, but laid waste in 1332 by Irish chieftains. After being in a state of ruin for 21 years, it was rebuilt again, and again attacked by the Irish. The fourth and present castle was built by the McNamara family in 1425. By 1475, it became the stronghold of the O'Briens. Later on, the lands were granted to various plantation families, the last being the Studdart family who left the castle in 1804, allowing it to fall into disrepair, to live in the more comfortable Bunratty House nearby. Extensive restoration work began in 1945 and it was sold to Viscount Lord Gort in 1954. In 1960, it opened to the public as a National Monument.
