| Description |
English: Bungay: parish church of St. Mary The church stands in the heart of the town and, with its magnificent tall tower, is undoubtedly the centrepiece. To the left, we see the ruins of a Benedictine priory, which dates from the twelfth century and, like most of the town, was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1677. Likewise the main church, which had been completed only fifteen years earlier.
Surprisingly (to me, anyway) for such a prominent church, it has been redundant since 1981. For a view of the tower from the other side, see 1602682. |
