Von 6000 in den Fünfziger Jahren auf gegenwärtig 53000 stieg die Zahl der Einwohner von Schwedt an der Oder mit dem Aufbau des Petrolchemischen Kombinates. Zusammen mit rund 17000 komfortablen Neubauwohnungen entstanden z.B. 22 Kindergarten-Krippen-Kombinationen, 4 Schulen und vier Schulspeisegaststätten, ein schönes Feierabend- und Pflegeheim (ein zweites ist jetzt in Bau), ein modernes Kulturhaus und das Centrum-Warenhaus.
