Suhl, Stadtansicht Zentralbild Sturm Ho 15.3.1967 DDR Bezirksstadt Suhl Die rund 100 Jahre alte Metallarbeiterstadt Suhl (etwa 30.000 Einwohner) am Südhang des Thüringer Waldes, seit Jahrhunderten als Zentrum der Jagd- und Sportwaffenproduktion im In- und Ausland bekannt, hat ihr Gesicht in den letzten Jahren grundlegend verändert. Das einst verwinkelte Städtchen mit den typischen kleinen Fachwerkhäuschen verjüngte sich allein seit 1963 durch zwei sozialistische Wohnzentren, in denen rund 1500 Familien wohnen. Ein weiteres Neubaugebiet entsteht gegenwärtig. Bekannt und beliebt im In- und Ausland sind die Kleinfahrzeuge der Typen "Schwalbe", "Spatz", "Star" und "Sperber" vom VEB Fahrzeug- und Gerätewerk Simson Suhl, dem größten Hersteller von Kleinfahrzeugen im sozialistischen Lager.
