For documentary purposes the German Federal Archive often retained the original image captions, which may be erroneous, biased, obsolete or politically extreme.
Berlin, Rotes Rathaus ADN-ZB Schneider 6.7.87-ce-Berlin: Das Rote Rathaus gehört zu den Wahrzeichen der Hauptstadt. Es wurde in den Jahren 1861 bis 1869 nach Entwürfen des Architekten Herrmann-Friedrich Waesemann im Neorenaissancestil errichtet und gilt als Meisterwerk handwerklicher Baukunst. Das Rathaus mit seinen drei Innenhöfen wird durch einen 74 Meter hohen Turm gekrönt. Unmittelbar neben dem Rathaus beginnt das Nikolaiviertel, wo Berlin vor siebeneinhalb Jahrhunderten seine erste Blütezeit als mittelalterliche Handelsstadt erlebte. In diesem bemerkenswerten Bauensemble entstanden in den letzten Jahren 788 Wohnungen.
