For documentary purposes the German Federal Archive often retained the original image captions, which may be erroneous, biased, obsolete or politically extreme.  Merseburg, Vogelkäfig, Rabe
ADN-ZB Lehmann 21.9.1983 Bez. Halle: Was für die Berliner der Bär, ist für die Merseburger der Rabe. Das Wappentier, ein Kolkrabe, "residiert" in einem schmiedeeisernen Käfig vor dem Schloß. Die Sage berichtet, daß Bischof Thilos von Trotha seinen Diener wegen des angeblichen Diebstahls eines wertvollen Ringes hinrichten ließ. Später stellte sich heraus, das ein Rabe den Ring stahl. Deshalb ziert dieser Vogel als nachträgliche Rehabilation des Dieners das Stadtwappen und den Eingangsbereich des Schlosses. (siehe auch 14 und 15N) |
