Ost-Berlin-Staatliches Schauspielhaus am Gendarmenmarkt mit Neuer und Französischer Kirche (Vorkriegsaufnahme)

Der Gendarmenmarkt, so benannt nach der einst hier gelegenen Hauptwache des Kürassierregiments heißt heute "Platz der Akademie". Drei berühmte Bauwerke umsäumten ihn: Das Staatliche Schauspielhaus, die Neue Kirche und die Französische Kirche. Das erstere wurde bereits 1774 unter Friedrich dem Großen von Boumann als kleines französisches Komödienhaus errichtet. Es wurde 1801/02 von C.F. Langhans durch das Deutsche Nationaltheater ersetzt, welches 1816 abbrannte. Schinkel schuf 1818/20 den festlichen Bau des Schauspielhauses.
Die beiden Kirchen rechts und links neben dem Schauspielhaus wurden um 1700 erbaut. Die beiden bedeutenden Kuppeltürme wurden 1780/85 von Gontard aufgesetzt und geben dem Platz trotz der Zerstörungen (beide Kuppeln sind ausgebrannt) noch heute seine monumentale Eindringlichkeit.
