On voit immédiatement que la différence des deux chrono- graphes est le double du temps de transmission. Et remarquez que les quantités 2 T, que Ton trouve ainsi par la comparaison des deux chronographes, sont tout-à -fait indépendantes de Texactitude des observations astronomiques, de Téquation per- sonnelle, etc. En effet on les obtiendrait de même, en donnant des signaux tout-à -fait arbitraires et à des intervalles quelcon- ques aux deux stations en question. Ainsi Texactitude avec laquelle on détermine ce temps de transmission dépend uni- quement de celle des instruments enregistreurs employés; c'est-à -dire essentiellement de deu^ éléments, d'abord de la régularité avec laquelle les pendules sont enregistrées sur les chronographes et ensuite de Texactitude avec laquelle on peut faire le relevé des signaux marqués sur le papier des chro- nographes. Pour obtenir des résultats nets sur le temps de la transmis- sion , il fallait déterminer les limites de Tinfluence de ces er- reurs, et la méthode d'observation que nous avons employée permettait de le faire assez exactement. Vous savez qu'on observe le passage des étoiles non pas au méridien même qui est une ligne fictive, mais à un certain nombre de fils; donc j'envoyai à chaque passage d'étoile 21 courants à Grenève qui s'y marquaient aussi bien que chez moi; Genève, dont la lunette ne possède que 5 fils, nous envoyait
