Material examinedWASHINGTON, D.C.—Spring, south end of National Zoological Park, 10 cotypes(syntypes), L. Hubricht, Mar. 9, 1938 (USNM 77804); 3 male, 4 female, and 2juvenile paratypes, same date (LH, and 2 slide mounts in JRH). Diagnosis.—Medium-sized interstitial species distinguished fromthe two previously described species by more convex posterior marginsof pereopod 5-7 bases, more spinose 1st uropod in the female, and 72 U.S. NATIONAL MUSEUM BULLETIN 2 59 more spinose 2nd uropod in both sexes; specifically distinguished fromS. tenuis, with which it is S3rmpatric, by less concave palmar marginsof gnathopodal propods and by the proportinately shorter 2nd antennaof mature males. Further distinguished from the majority of speciesof the tenuis group by the greater number of apical spines on the telsonof the male. Largest males, 9.75 mm; largest females, 10.00 mm.

SUBTERRANEAN AMPHIPOD STYGONECTES 73 Generally corresponding to the description by Hubricht and Mackin(1940) with the following additions and modifications: Male.—Antenna 1 about 50 percent longer than body, not morethan 25 percent longer than antenna 2; primary flagellum with upto 25 segments. Antenna 2 relatively long; flagellum with up to 13segments, penultimate segment not enlarged or arcuate. Mandibularpalpal segment 3 with 7 or 8 long setae, segment 2 with 8 or 9 setae.Maxilla 1, inner plate with 4 apical, plumose setae. Maxilla 2, innerplate with 4 long, obliquely placed, plumose setae, Maxilliped,inner plate with 3 or 4 thick apical spines. Inner lobes
