he engine has no frame, the axle bearings beingbolted to brackets riveted to the under side of the boiler.Only the front and middle axle bearings are fitted withsprings. In the course of its working career, the Samson traveledconsiderably. In addition to having been brought across theAtlantic, the old locomotive was brought to Chicago in 1883for display at the Exposition of Railway Appliances (figure54). There it was accompanied by George Davidson, long itsengineer and said to have come with it to Nova Scotia fromEngland. Ten years later, in 1893, it was again brought to Chicago,this time to be exhibited at the Worlds Columbian Exposi-tion. At the conclusion of the exposition the Samson, and theAlbion that had accompanied it, were taken by the Bahimoreand Ohio Railroad Co. to Baltimore for preservation there.The B & O later included the Samson (and also the Albion) in Figure 55. — Samson, with an original passenger car of 1 840, at the Fair of theIron Horse, September 30, 1 927.

In June 1928, when the two old locomotives were given bythe B & O to the Province of Nova Scotia, the Samson re-turned to the land of its youth, only to be placed in storagein Halifax. Later, however, it was given to the town of NewGlasgow, through which it had run almost daily in its earlydays, and it is now housed in a small building especiallyconstructed for it at the towns railroad station. The F/na/ Decode In 1839 the Philadelphia locomotive building firm ofEastwick and Harrison constructed to the order of MoncureRobinson for the Philadelphia and Reading Rail Road Co.a noteworthy anthracite-burning locomotive, named theGowan and Marx after an English banking firm.
