I^VES-Altemate simple, occur singly or in pairs but never opposite 8-4 inches lonf. nt^l^tn^te rm^rgin. deep green above, pale yellowish-green below. LEAP-SCAES-Similar to those of the Black Birch. HABITATL-Prefers the banks of streams, lakes, pools, and swamps Occasionally found uiTdi^t^SionB It is called River Birch because it is usually found along the banks of rivers or other locations having similar moisture conditions. mPOETANCE OF THE SPECIES-The Red Birch is of "Jtle commercial i^PJ^^^^^^^J^^^, syivania as a lumber tree on account of the l^";!/;^'\^IIJ^'^^^^ of its wood, and the absence of figure and attractive color ^/'^^f«. J^?^ " ™n^^^^ distribution. It is essentially a southern tree '«ai"«/*%^^^* ^^if^'fJ^^^^ and adjoining states.
