Admjid ujnjay* WESTERN WASHINGTON. 35 LONGWALL SYSTEM. The longwall system is always interesting, because of the completeextraction which it allows. An adaptation of this method within apanel was tried at one of the mines, as shown in Figure 18. Thebed in this place is about 6 feet in thickness, dips at an angle of 39°,and is immediately overlain by 27 feet of bone and carbonaceousshale, above which is a main roof of jointed sandstone 25 feet thick. This method is a modified chute and pillar system in connectionwith longwall. The gangway and first counter with the connectingchute were driven as usual, and the chutes or narrow breast werecontinued up the pitch. There are two blocks above the counter. Theupper end of the second block was cut at an angle of about 45° withthe direction of the chute, as shown in the figure, and the longwallface was started at this point and carried in steps 6 feet in lengtheach way.
