Pending future investigation of other means of preventing prop-osition of coal-dusl explosions, due attention has at all events beengiven to means of preventing their initiation through explosives.A number of experiments have been conducted at Frameries withpermitted explosives in order to test their relative safety in the pres-ence of coal dust alone. These tests were carried out in the sameway and under the same conditions as when testing in presence offire damp, the temperature in the gallery being maintained as nearlyas possible at 25° C. The coal dust used for all tests was taken from one of the Agrappemines, and contained 21 per cent of volatile matter. Some of thecoal raised in Belgium contains as much as 35 per cent, but as thenumber of collieries where this coal is found is small, and the quan-tity of dust given off by the coal insignificant, the other quality ofdust mentioned was chosen.
