Title
bulla (obverse)
Description
English: Cast lead papal bulla of Pope Urban VI (1318-1389) who was Pope from 1378-1389. A lead bulla or seal was used to authenticate a papal document or 'bull'. The obverse reads *URB / ANUS / *P.P*. VI in three lines within a border of pellets. There are crowns or a bracket above each letter of the P.P and there are two eagles below the third line on either side of the socket for the cord which attached the bulla to a document. The reverse has the portraits of Saint Paul to the left and Saint Peter to the right within two pelleted aureoles, with a Roman cross between them. The saints are identified above with the letters SPASPE. The bulla is slightly worn but in very good condition with hardly any corrosion or damage.
