Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: male: 287 cm, female: 240 cm; Weight: male: 1000 kg, female: 273 kg; Identification: The Steller's sea lion is light to reddish-brown in color. Males have a heavy mane; Habitat: Islands, coasts; Diet: Carnivore: fish, cephalopods, mollusks, shrimp, crabs; Reproduction: Pups are born from May to June and are weaned by 11 months of age; Social Structure: Several hundred to several thousand sea lions sometimes depart from land and disperse into groups of fewer than 50 when 8-24 km offshore; Behavior: Males are territorial; Status: Threatened; Interesting Facts: The Steller's sea lion is the largest otariid species. They can dive up to 180 meters deep when searching for food.
